  • A fisherman wades out to fetch his boat off Santa Catalina , Panama. The numbers of sea-life in the nearby waters have drastically declined in the last ten years, due mainly to the increase in demand for seafood from such metropolitan areas such as Panama City. Overfishing is of great concern worldwide as fish numbers around the globe continue to plummet.

  • A waves breaks at Carolina Beach, NC, where erosion has caused the government to begin beach renourishment to protect homes and buildings. Although the movement of sand is a natural (and usually gradual) process, recent storms have caused an urgency for the dredging of offshore sand to replace the shore that has been eaten away. Many barrier islands are increasingly being developed with multi-million dollar homes and resorts, even though the areas are little more than high sandbars.

  • A school of Manta Rays feeds, gliding with open mouths through cloudy, plankton rich water off the coast of Panama. Many species of fish are diminishing in numbers as a result of pollution and overfishing. Sea-life worldwide is being drastically effected by these and other forms of human intrusion.

  • The landscape of the Vinales Valley, in the Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba, is dotted with unusual limestone hills, or "mogotes," created by the erosion of the ancient Guaniguanico mountain range. Mogotes date to the Jurassic period, and are only found in Cuba and some areas of China. The Viñales Valley has been on UNESCO?s World Heritage List since November 1999 as a cultural landscape enriched by traditional farm and village architecture. Old-fashioned farming methods are still used in Viñales, notably to grow tobacco..

  • Sea Oats wave in the wind on the sand dunes of Wrightsville Beach, NC. Sea oats are a type of grass that grows along the East Coast of the United States, Mexico, and on islands in the Caribbean. Sea oats are well suited to saline environments, and are often used in soil stabilization projects to prevent erosion because their long root structure firmly holds loose sand and soil. Sea oats are a protected grass in most states along the East Coast.

  • CHIANG MAI - FEB 27 2006: A curious baby elephant seeks shelter with its mother at Elephant Nature Park in Northern Thailand. Females usually have one calf after a gestation period of 18-22 months and give birth every three to four years. The calves weigh about 200 pounds (100kg) at birth. Asian elephants - strong, social, and intelligent - have been trained for thousands of years for use in transportation, labor, and ritual. In Thailand, Elephants are of immense cultural importance, but their numbers are shockingly plummeting. In 1905, there were over 100,000 elephants in this land - now they are estimated at less than 5,000, of which barely half are in the wild. (Photo by Logan Mock-Bunting)
