Sign for Portsmouth Village on Portsmouth Island, NC

A sign shows the way to Portsmouth Village on Portsmouth Island, NC. Located in the North Core Banks, just southwest of Ocracoke Island. Portsmouth Village was established by North Carolina's Colonial Assembly in 1753, but the village's last permanent residents left in 1971. It came under ownership of the National Park Service as part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore in 1976.
