A marker buoy lies washed up on a beach of Portsmouth Island, NC. Located in the North Core Banks, just southwest of Ocracoke Island. Portsmouth Village was established by North Carolina's Colonial Assembly in 1753, but the island's last permanent residents left in 1971, and is now uninhabited.
