  • Bruce Mock straightens his buoy-line into the waters of the Gulf Stream while spearfishing of the coast of NC. The line is attached to a small buoy. In case the diver cannot pull the fish up in one breath, he can follow the buoy from above. The buoy also creates drag, tiring the fish out quicker.

  • B. Mock spearfishes in the Gulf Stream off of Ocracoke Island. Located at the southernmost tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Freediving is a type of breath-hold diving in which divers descend for the length of a breath with out any SCUBA tanks or breathing apparatus. Many believe spearfishing to be the most sustainable form of fishing, since there is no blind-casting of lines or nets. The hunter sees exactly what they are fishing for, and thus there is no wasteful by-catch of unwanted creatures.

  • Fishermen organize their nets on the beach of Santa Catalina, Panama. The numbers of sea-life in the nearby waters have drastically declined in the last ten years. Overfishing is of great concern worldwide as fish numbers around the globe continue to plummet. Many species of fish are diminishing in numbers as a result of pollution and overfishing. Sea-life worldwide is being drastically effected by these and other forms of human intrusion.

  • Ren Chapman gasps for air as he climbs out of the water and into his boat. Since freedivers use snorkels instead of scuba tanks, there are no bubbles and divers are able to move closer to fish without spooking them. The trade off is that the dive is limited to the time of one breath.

  • Plankton floats in the warm waters of he Gulf Stream off Ocracoke Island, NC. Plankton can be a nurturer of sea life - as many fish feed off of them - but when plankton's growth gets out of control, deadly blooms can take over the water and deplete oxygen, choking and suffocating other life.
