  • A water container on the Mexico/US Border near Agua Perieta, Mexico and Douglas, Arizona. Hundreds of undocumented immigrants pass across the desert here, and dozens die every year from dehydration and exposure. A group called "Agua Por Vida" leaves the containers and marks them with flags. They do not encourage people to cross the nearly 2,000 mile border but do not believe people should die needlessly.

  • B. Mock spearfishes in the Gulf Stream off of Ocracoke Island. Located at the southernmost tip of North Carolina's Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Freediving is a type of breath-hold diving in which divers descend for the length of a breath with out any SCUBA tanks or breathing apparatus. Many believe spearfishing to be the most sustainable form of fishing, since there is no blind-casting of lines or nets. The hunter sees exactly what they are fishing for, and thus there is no wasteful by-catch of unwanted creatures.

  • Ren Chapman gasps for air as he climbs out of the water and into his boat. Since freedivers use snorkels instead of scuba tanks, there are no bubbles and divers are able to move closer to fish without spooking them. The trade off is that the dive is limited to the time of one breath.

  • A school of Manta Rays feeds, gliding with open mouths through cloudy, plankton rich water off the coast of Panama. Such unexpected wonders are one of the main reasons free-diving is so appealing - with no bubbles from scuba tanks to scare off animals, a careful free-diver can get closer to easily frightened fish and wildlife..(Photo by Logan Mock-Bunting) logan@scott-free.com
